An especially early start this morning, maybe it’s the weather. I was watching the news before 6am on ITV,
and saw an interesting story on GMTV about ‘fruit tuck shops’. It seems that children who attend schools that run fruit tuck shops are much more likely to eat more fruit if they and their friends are also banned from bringing unhealthy snacks on to the school premises, according to research published online ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. A greengrocer on site? Wouldn’t that be wonderful? The children would eat apples and bananas instead of processed sugars and fats. This would give them part of their 5 a day, supply them with antioxidants and fibre and fruit sugars, and get them used to having such foods as staple dailies rather than something that has to be endured to please parents.
It would be a great leveller too, much like school uniforms, as it irons out differences between children that can lead to friction.
Now, all we have to do is ban junk food in all forms from schools……..
